To film an environmental documentary of our sailing journey through the Southern Caribbean sea while performing live music powered by solar energy, and to showcase the people making a difference in our global eco-systems through sustainable farming, marine conservation, and eco-housing projects.
BIO:
The idea for The Dirt Livingston Project came about after Sam Caswell returned from a sailing trip from the Caribbean Island of Antigua in November 2010. This lead to an array of questions about what we are doing to the planet as a species, and these questions have only lead to the burning sensation that we need to explore what people are doing to improve our resource consumption. While aboard Ghostboat Sam was crew-mates with Barrett Mead. It turned out that Barrett’s boat, Atlas, had sunk in a hurricane, but that he had brought it back to the surface and was planning to haul it out and bring her back to a healthy state. As you can see, the mission was accomplished. While sailing, the two teased the idea of a solar band being put together to come back down to the islands, but it was more of a pipe-dream at the time.
Soon after returning to Boston, M.A., the same conversation arose with Sam and Scott King, only this time there was a real possibility in funding and a boat to transport us. Just for fun they began planning the trip piece by piece. As time progressed the thought grew in many different directions. During this time Sam and his brother, Will Caswell, had been trying to form a media production company to utilize their Audio/Video degrees. It only made sense that Will joined the team. Colin Bradley, who is in a gigging band with Sam, immediately jumped on-board. Now all we needed was a singer/songwriter to lead the musical group. Matt Munson, a close friend of Scott’s, was skeptical because he didn’t consider himself an “environmental activist” type of person. What he didn’t know was that this was one of the points of the film. We want to show that “regular everyday people” can do what they love, and with a little bit of awareness, can change their impact as an individual, thereby “leading by example.” He said yes! The connections were obviously trying to tell us to move forward with the idea. That idea became The Dirt Livingston Project.
Objective:
The Dirt Livingston Project is our plan to encompass all of our talents and views, as a collective group, to achieve a positive, thought-provoking documentary film about our passage through the Caribbean on board the vessel Atlas. We will be showcasing the people and organizations that are making contributions to our planet. Our goal is to show as many people as we can, how easily you can harness energy for your daily routines without making a negative impact on the planet. We will be doing so by performing our songs live while using solar energy to power the show. This allows us to physically show people how it works and how infinite the applications can be. We hope you will follow our story as it unfolds; our departure date is going to be the last week of February 2012.
